Local Area Network (LAN) is a computer network linking several computers, which can also be extended to shared peripheral devices, covering a limited area.

It differs from Wide Area Networks (WAN) not only because of its more limited geographical extension, but also because it allows better performance in terms of data transfer speed and does not require the use of dedicated circuits on telephone lines (leased line).
